The Former is a heavy mechanical unit which specializes in upgrading and modifying tiles. It is one of the two civilian units, which are incapable of outfitting weapons making them vulnerable to attacks by any enemy unit. They can however be outfitted with armor and devices in order to boost their survivability. It is also one of the starting units for the Solar Dynasty.

Amphibious Former[]
The Amphibious Former is also a heavy mechanical unit and it may be unlocked if player discovers Amphibious Landscaping in the Mechanization Era . It performs the same function as the standard Former however it can also enter sea tiles without changing into transport which allows for modification and improvement of sea tiles. Amphibious Former base attributes are nearly exactly the same to standard Former apart from production cost which is doubled.
